Englert Theatre
4/22/05 Iowa City, IA So...... how long has it been now since Pam & Keith Dempster retired from The Mill, as did the Sunday night Greg Brown shows? Couple of years, maybe. Iowa Citians and others sold out the freshly restored Englert for a very warm homecoming. Even the cold spring rain and gusts of wind from the north didn't put a damper on this special evening. The glowing amethyst screen behind the stage contributed to the evening's ambience. From left to right: 5 guitars lined up for Bo, 2 for Greg, 1 big bad bass for Rico and the keyboard for Zollo basked in the glow. Shortly before 8, the smoke machine center stage gently puffed out billowy clouds. What was up with that? Naturally, the first request shouted out was for "Purple Haze." My comments here are based my front row seat, 1 of only 16. A little slice of heaven. I'll just throw out a few purely subjective words to describe what was happening between the boys and the audience reactions: relaxed, grateful, generous, unassuming, genuine, happy, respect and love. Watching Bo blend into Greg - there are no words. The King of Cool. Watching Rico seduce the bass with sways and spins, effortless. Watching Master Zollo command the keys, fluid. All holding court with His Browness. This night was so perfect, that it will be hard to go to another show. Been to lots of GB shows, with all kinds of supporting players. This was it, the one.
